Hepatitis B Vaccine Information
This is an illness caused by a virus that is contracted from contact with contaminated bodily fluids and blood.  Hepatitis B is also considered a sexually transmitted disease. Hepatitis B can cause a range of symptoms from a mild illness to a serious long-term infection that can lead to chronic liver disease and liver cancer. Clients often think they are at “low risk” for coming into contact with the Hepatitis B virus.  Some of the most common issues international travelers encounter are accidents and injuries such as car accidents, swimming injuries, hiking injuries, etc.  These accidents/injuries are usually unexpected but are relatively “high risk” for contact with blood or other bodily fluids.  Also treatment for such injuries may require blood transfusions or a life saving procedure which in the developing word potentially puts you are risk for blood borne illness such as Hepatitis B. The Hepatitis B vaccine is an injectable vaccine given routinely to children in the United States as well as unvaccinated travelers.  The vaccine series consists of three injections given over six months. Denver Travel Medicine Clinic does administer Hepatitis B vaccine. Note regarding Hepatitis A and B vaccines- Denver Travel Medicine Clinic also administers Twinrix ® which is a combination vaccine containing Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccinations in one injection.
